Adult Football Matches W/E 27/08
Seniors V Ballyboden Senior 1 Championship.
Paddy Power had Boden at 1/8 and BSJ at 5/1. Obviously our lads had other ideas as this match was very much in the melting pot down to the last 5 minutes.
Boden got off the mark first with a point which was followed by a free by Luke Breathnach. Boden followed with 2 more while we equalised with 2 Breathnach points one from a free and a great one from play. We then went ahead with goal poacher Donnacha Carey pouncing on to a breaking ball in Boden goalmouth to finish to the net to put us 3 up. The next 10 minutes was a barren spell when Boden got 4 points in a row and we then conceded an opportunistic goal .However we got the last 2 points to go in at HT 1-9 to 1-7 down
We started the second half with the first 2 scores, points from Luke Breathnach a free and a good point from Oisin Grady . Boden got the next 2 points followed by points from Luke Breathnach and one from Joe Sweeney who was lurking around the Boden goalmouth to bring it level again. Boden got 3 points in a row but we rallied with 2 points from the aforementioned players. However, Boden with strong forwards options off the bench finished stronger and won by 1-17 to 1-13.
A huge effort that will no doubt bring on many of our younger players. Best for BSJ were Paddy Connaughton , Nicky Devereux, , Joe Sweeney (3 points from play from his mid field position). Donnacha Carey and Luke Breathnach. MOTM award goes to the youngest player on the field , making his senior championship debut start, Matt Gardiner. His coolness on the ball and his distribution were that of a veteran.
Next up is our final round robin game V Ballymun with a quarter final spot at stake on the 10th September in Parnell Pk at 4-15.
Inters V Na Fianna Junior 1 Championship.
Following our win against Maurs this match was always going to be a more difficult task as Na Fianna won this Championship last year but were not promoted as they have already a team in the Inter Championship.
The first 2 scores , 2 points went to NF as we struggled to retain possession of the balls going into the forward line . We scored the next 2 points through Gavin Barton and Ben Hyland. However we got hit with a NF goal in the 13th minute and then a further point. We rallied and following a lovely diagonal pass, Eoghan Seoighe finished the ball to the net. Niall Dunphy finished the first half with an excellent point. HT score NF 1-5 BSJ 1-4.
We started the second half with a good point from Ben Hyland which was followed by 3 NF points. However roving from the backlines Jack Kennelly and Naoise Cronin kicked 2 great points. We brought it back to 1 point with a Gavin Barton point and then levelled it with a Niall Dunphy point. We exchanged 2 points apiece and going into injury we sought the winner but missed opportunities until young Joey Quirke coming off the bench after a year out with a serious injury won possession and calmly slotted the ball over the bar for the winner.
Heart stopping stuff but the victory guarantees us a home QTR final game. Best for BSJ were Kevin Mullderrig ,Jack Kennelly, Finán Chambers Ben Hyland and Gavin Barton.
Next up is the last of our round robin games V Thomas Davis on Sunday 10th September 11-00 in Kiltipper
Junior 1 V St Brigids Junior 2 Championship
We won this match on a scorline of 1-11 to 0-3 . The result was never in doubt as we put up early scores to lead by 1-5 to 0-1 at the HT. The goal came from a great movement which was finished by Sean Gildea.
The second half Brigids went for a damage limitation and were very defensive . We struggled to finish off good movements but with scores coming from David Quinn, Cathal Morrisey ,Dara Kennedy Eoin Coffey and Seamus Comer we finished comfortable winners.
Best for BSJ were Eoin Hoctor, Oscar Cronin, Dara Kennedy & Míchael De Faoite . This puts us in a strong position going into our last game where a win will guarantee us a QTR final place.
Last round robin match V Naomh Barrog, 10th September 11-00 in Marlay Park
Junior 2 V St Annes Junior 6 Championship
BSJ Junior Bs were beaten by St Annes in the 2nd round of the Championship but live to fight another day. On a very wet and cold evening in Bohernabreena, both teams struggled to get going. Points exchanged over the opening 25 minutes left Annes a point up. Unfortunately, they tagged another couple of points on in the last 5 minutes which left BSJ 3 down at half time despite some good point scoring by Cian Duffy and a lot of BSJ possession. The first 2 scores the opening minutes of the second half decided it, both were goals by Annes - typical messy goals you see on wet and slippy pitch where the dark sky made viability poor. BSJ fought back with a goal by Sean Dunne offering hope but unfortunately a lightning quick counterattack by Annes, who reached to the bench for speedy Minors, resulted in a well taken goal. BSJ continued attacking with Sean Burke catching the eye along with Dixie Reilly and “young” Tony Gillick, George Walker and Shane Duffy who put in great shifts as usual. Aaron Crotty and Cian Hallinan formed a new midfield partnership which bodes well for the future. Delighted to see a panel of 21 on the night who left everything on the pitch with special mention to Joe Sheehan and Eamon Brennan who were back to help out after a number of injuries. Rory Kyne, Joey Gormely and Sean Gunnigan played their part dealing well with conditions the weather delivered to while Shane McGonigle, Conor Murphy, Andy Kane, Billy Davern and Barry O’Brien were lively throughout while the commitment of Michael Manner, Darragh Johnson and Matt Waters remains as strong as ever. Final score St Annes 3-11 BSJ 1-7
The good news is that Judes (who we beat well in the first game) beat Clann naGael on the same night so we will progress if we beat Clann in final game which is well within the team. That match is fixed for 10th Sept Loreto 3p,
