Adult Football Match Reports
This week we have reports on 2 matches in what was a good week with 3 wins and one loss.
AFL 1. Seniors
We met our neighbours Ballyboden St Endas on Saturday evening in the local derby. Conditions in Marlay Pk were excellent with a slight cross field breeze. Boden were first off the mark with 2 points from play. Despite having lots of possession playing down the hill in the first 10 minutes the final delivery into the full forward line just didn’t hit their targets and it was 8 minutes before we got the first score , an excellent point from Ronan Cullen. We followed up another point from Joe Sweeney and Glynn Whelan who made a great catch for an advantage inside the 20m line . After 13 mins it was 3 to2 pts in our favour. Boden kicked the next 3 points before a John Clair point brought it back to a 1 point deficit. Jack lundy and Liam Fenton kicked points in between 2 Boden points to leave the score 6 to 7 in Boden favour at HT.
Boden started the second half strongly, scoring the first 2 points before half time substitute Johnny Quirke made a 40 yards burst up the field to finish with an excellent point. Glynn Whelan hit the next point following a long delivery in from John Clair. Boden came back strongly with points to leave 4 in it after 12 mins. It was really tick for tat after that. Captain Eoin Fitzpatrick led by example with a great 2 pointer. We then had 2 great goal opportunities of goals , but one was well saved by Boden keeper and the other blasted wide from 10 yds. However in the 20th minute we got our first goal when Donnacha Carey ,on as a sub laid off to an inrushing Joe Sweeney, who blasted to the net to leave 1 points in it. Then a touch of class between the 2 Jacks , when Jack Lundy with a free reacted quickly to Jack Long moving into a free position in the large square and he buried it to the back of the net to leave us 2 up going into injury time. We followed up with another goal opportunity but Glynn’s shot was well saved . Boden kicked a 2 pointer and a point to leave them 1 up 4 mins into injury time. However Jack Lundy delivered an excellent 35m foot pass to Liam Fenton to score the equaliser. So it finished in a draw on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-18. A draw was fully deserved and a win would not have flattered us in what was a well contested affair between 2 teams that were depleted.
This was an excellent team performance and probably our best performance to date in the league What was also encouraging was the impact of the bench. Best for BSJ were Aodhan Clabby in goal who was excellent under the high balls, full back young Matthew Gardiner, Seamus Fenton who covered a lot of ground going forward from wing back, Eoin Fitpatrick and Joe Sweeney at midfield and Glynn Whelan and Liam Fenton in the forwards.
Next up is a mid week match V Thomas Davis in Kiltipper at 7-15 on Tuesday 6th May.
AFL 10. Junior 10
In another local derby we met Stars of Erin in a damp Marlay Pk on Friday evening.
This was really a bizarre match. Four minutes into the game we were 2 goals down and indeed could have conceded another. Management took immediate action in introducing the experienced Ciaran Mc Cabe who was carrying a slight injury and things settled down. However despite starting to dominate possession we could not convert it into scores and our first did not come until the 18th minute , a point from Collie O Donnell. We followed up with points by Billy Daveron and Sean Murphy. We then got the first of our goals when Collie O Donnell won a long ball and laid off to Billy Daveron to direct the ball over the line. Star got the next score a point ,their first in 23 mins after Sean Murphy got one for BSJ. So we went in 1 up at half time.
The second half started well when the Murphy brother combined for Sean to finish off the movement with a point. Collie O Donnell got the next point and then he blasted off the crossbar but Niall Glesson followed up to execute an excellent finish to the net. We followed with 2 more points before sloppy defending allowed Stars in for a goal to leave us 5 pts up after 15 mins of the half. Then came an excellent solo effort of a goal by Collie O Donell who was obviously enjoying the extra space allowed under the new rules. He fielded a high ball from behind his marker 20 m out , moved towards goal before lobbying the advancing keeper . It was very reminiscent of many goals scored by Shane Mc Cann . It’s a pity his father had gone home, as he would have been delighted with the effort. We went on to kick another 5 pts the best of which was from centre half back Will Langrell. It finished 3-14 to 3-4. We scored 3-14 in 42 mins while we held Stars to 1-3 for 50 mins.
Man of Match was Collie O Donnell with 1-9 , making up for a very indifferent start to the league by him.
Next up is V Geraldine P Moran on Thursday 9th May in Ballyogan at 7-15.
Other Results
The Inters were beating by Garristown on a scoreline of 2-9 to 2-13 having put in a gallant effort .
The Junior A continued their good run with a comprehensive win over St Vincents on a scoreline of 2-17 to0-7
Junior B
A good win after a bad start down 2 goals in 5 minutes came back to win well by 10 points. Was good to see Collie O’Donnell know where the goals are again and Billy Daveron adding to his spreadsheet.
The result sees BSJ high up the table with all to play for this season
