Junior A Footballers Win Promotion
The Junior A team won promotion to Division 7 this weekend after 2 comprehensive wins on Wednesday and Sunday . The ground work for the promotion was laid on Tuesday night when we beat Bank of Ireland. Both team went into the game joint third, with 17 points each. But BOI playing on their own patch and mid-week when they are at their strongest, was going to be a big battle for our lads. Playing down the hill with the breeze we settled in well but were still only 5 pts up at half time . BOI came out very confident in the second half and got the first score ,a point. For the next 15 mins we played outstanding football and every scoring chance we created ,we took the right option and were 10pts up twenty minutes inti the half. Our defence stood strong and BOI got very frustrated with the lack of scores. We finished comprehensive winners on a scoreline of 2-17 to 0-11 . Highlights of the game ,which was the best team performance to date, were Cillian Gibbons great goal in the first half , 5 points from play by Eoin Bradley, and an exhibition of high fielding by the evergreenKevin Power.
So on Sunday we faced Ballymun where a win would guarantee us promotion. We played down the hill against the breeze in the first half and with slippery conditions ,we were slow to settle into the game with some sloppy passing and poor shot options. The first score came in the fifth minute , a good point from play by Lughaidh Lynch. It was followed by another good point from play by Eoin Bradley. Lughaidh put us 3 up from a free before Mun got on the scoreboard with a point after 10 mins. Lughaidh with his shooting boots on kicked another 2 points from play before we got our first goal. Kevin Power made a great catch on his own 40 m line ,delivered a long ball into the forwards for it to break to Eoin Bradley who buried it to the net. We were 1-5 to 0-1 up and really moved up a gear in the last 10 mins of the half. Eoin Bradley delivered a long diagonal ball into the square where Cormac Fenton made a great catch to bury it in the back of the net. We followed up with a further 3 points from play from James Mc Donagh and Lughaidh to leave the HT score 2-9 to 0-3 .
Mun got an unusual break after the start of the second half , when they got a penalty for a technical foul when our keeper David Quinn had to accept a back pass . They duly convertedthe penalty which should have been a free . However we hit back with a goal by Eoin Bradley and a point by Rian Coote. Sean Gildea then showed his great leadership when driving forward from wing back and scored a point. Best point of the second half was scored by Lughaidh from 45m in the 47 minute ,although the referee credited him with only a point .We emptied the bench and became a bit disjointed . However we scored 1-3 in the last 10 minutes , with the goal coming from Ben Peyton whose speculative shot deceived the keeper, while Mun who kept on battling kicked 3 points. Final Score BSJ 4-12 Mun 1-9.
Best for BSJ, which was a great team performance were, Gavin Fahy at full back and Captain, Sean Burke corner back, Sean Gildea who put in a big effort motoring up and down the field, centre fielders Jack Mc Dermott and Eoin Hoctor, Eoin Bradley at centre forward Lughaidh Lynch who kicked 5 points from play , and Cormac Fenton. So with 2 games left to be played and with promotion secured ,management and players can concentrate on the Championship. Well done to all the players and the Management Team of young and not so young, Alan Garvin, David Quinn, Cathal Mc Garrigle, ShaneSheridan and Gerry Quinn. Both players and management were in great celebratory form in the clubhouse on Sunday night.
