Following on from the fantastic Junior B victory on Monday, our Junior A Ladies made it two championship wins from two for BSJ this week with a terrific 2-14 to 2-5 victory over Portobello in a hard-fought, physical and highly competitive Championship F Group B encounter.
Portobello struck first straight from the throw-in, but the response from the girls was excellent, with Sophie Fearon finding the net five minutes later to settle us into the game. The next 15 minutes were very much tit-for-tat, with both sides battling for every ball. Portobello grabbed a goal in the 15th minute to keep things finely balanced.
A well-taken point from Christine McCambridge in the 22nd minute kept us ticking over, and then came a huge moment in the game. In the 23rd minute, Orla Glancy finished a superb team move with a brilliant goal, giving BSJ a 2-6 to 1-4 lead and helping us take a real grip on proceedings. With no further scores before the interval, we went into the break five points ahead.
π A strong half-time team talk, led by captain Sadhbh NΓ UileagΓ³id, set the tone for the second half. The message was clear: start fast, keep the pressure on, and maintain our intensity.
The girls delivered exactly that, with a BSJ point inside the first 30 seconds of the restart, followed by another from Sophie Fearon two minutes later. Portobello came back fighting, but the defence stood tall. Katie Byrne led the resistance superbly, with the backline forcing four wides during a crucial period when Portobello were trying to get back into the game.
There was a setback when Derbhla unfortunately pulled up injured, and before we could fully settle after the substitution, Portobello broke through for a goal, making it 2-8 to 2-4.
To the girlsβ credit, there was no panic. We began to dominate possession, moved the ball with real composure, and worked excellent scores. Sophie Fearon added another point, Sadhbh chipped in with a score, and then Layla Hemp took over with three excellent points, showing great confidence and attacking intent. Portobello managed just a single reply during that spell, and Orla Glancy rounded off the scoring with a final point after a lengthy stoppage caused by cramp affecting players on sides.
This was a real team performance. The work rate, tackling, support play and communication throughout the pitch were outstanding, and every player contributed to a victory that was far more impressive than the scoreline alone suggests.
A special mention to RΓ³isΓn in goal, who dealt with several dangerous portobello shots and delivered excellent kick outs, and to the entire defensive unit for standing up to a very physical Portobello side.
Most importantly, this was a performance built on character, composure and teamwork.
Two Junior championship games this week, two excellent wins for BSJ, and plenty of positives to build on.
πͺ One game at a time, keep the standards high, and letβs bring this momentum into training and the next championship battle.
