St Maur’s 2-06 BSJ 2-07
A Special Victory in North County Dublin
Many teams arrive at St Maur's with high expectations, but few manage to win in this fortress in Rush. This week, on a bright but very breezy evening for football, the BSJ senior ladies managed to do just that, registering a narrow win as a fresh wind blew in from the Irish Sea.
For those who watch them regularly this BSJ group continues to deliver solid team performances and to generally impress with a nice style of play. It was a highly efficient display from all 18 girls who took the field, and it was great to see the return of Orlagh Nolan from the blue of Dublin to the BSJ ranks.
Despite BSJ controlling the play and dominating possession in the first quarter, the scores stayed close, with BSJ leading 1-02 to 1-01 having conceded a goal slightly against the run of play. St Maur's began to find a little rhythm, but it only seemed to spur the BSJ ladies to push harder, resulting in a half time scoreline of 2-06 to 1-03. Both goals were converted by Orlagh after good team moves to create the chances. The BSJ girls were justifiably satisfied with their first 30 as they retreated to the half time huddle.
The second half was a different affair, with St Maur's coming out determined to close the gap. They are a talented team and played some good football in the third quarter gradually cutting into the BSJ lead. The BSJ defence came under pressure and Katie in goal was called on to make a couple of good saves to keep the Maur’s girls at bay.
With the gap at the minimum the defence stood strong and good possession-based football from the BSJ girls saw the clock run out. In the heat of battle, when the gap closed to just one point, the BSJ ladies collectively retained their composure reaffirming their good league form. Congratulations to the Player of the Match Isabelle Ryan playing at the heart of the defensive unit at full back.
Credit to both teams, it was a ding-dong affair, which retained spectator interest right to the final whistle. When time was up there was a quiet satisfaction at getting the result, but also the manner of managing the game even when momentum had shifted a little. Congratulations to all the girls. The trip home along the M50 was a happy one.
Next up for the girls is an away trip to Templeogue Synge St. at 7.30 on Wednesday August 12th in their final League fixture before the Championship starts on the 19th August at home to St. Brigid’s. All support very welcome.
