Our Junior A Ladies produced a hugely committed and spirited performance in their second championship group game against a strong TSS side, eventually coming up just short on a scoreline of 2-7 to 3-8 after a contest that remained in the balance deep into the second half.
*A Fast Start*
BSJ settled into the game brilliantly and struck for the opening score in style. After winning a free, Christine McCambridge pounced for a superb early goal in the 4th minute to give us a perfect start. Christine continued to influence the game throughout, adding two first-half frees and constantly putting TSS under pressure around the middle third.
Further points from Lea Carey and Captain Sadhbh Nà Uileagóid helped us establish a 1-3 to 0-1 lead after 12 minutes, with the team showing great energy, tackling and support play all over the pitch. The defence, led by Fiona Watters, Lauren Reilly, Sophie Brennan, Juliet Moore and Derbhla Nolan, worked tirelessly to repel repeated TSS attacks.
TSS gradually worked their way back into the game with a series of points, but BSJ responded again through another Christine free to edge back in front. A late TSS goal, however, saw us trail by the minimum at the break, 1-4 to 1-5.
*A Fierce Second Half*
The second half was a real championship battle. BSJ showed excellent character and drew level through a well-taken Lea Carey point in the 37th minute.
TSS then hit a strong spell and opened up a four-point lead with a goal and two further scores. To the girls’ credit, there was no panic. The introduction of the bench brought fresh energy, with Neve Molloy, RóisÃn Wall, Kate Mander, Ciara McCarthy and Lucia Hosey all making important contributions.
Christine added another point from play, and Lea converted a free to leave just four between the sides heading into the closing stages.
Then came the moment that reignited the contest. In the 52nd minute, Libby Dillon burst through and fired a brilliant goal to cut the gap to a single point, 2-7 to 2-8, and suddenly momentum was with BSJ.
Unfortunately, TSS responded almost immediately with a crucial third goal, which ultimately proved decisive despite a determined final push from the girls.
