Unfortunately our final championship group game ended in defeat, with St Maurs coming away with a 2-14 to 2-9 victory. The result means that while we narrowly miss out on a Cup semi-final place, the girls now move forward into the Shield semi-final, where there is still plenty to play for.
This was a much tighter game than the final scoreline suggests, with BSJ battling all the way to the final whistle and showing tremendous character throughout.
*A Strong First Half*
St Maurs opened brightly and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after an early two-point score, but the response from the girls was excellent.
Eabha McCuskar was in superb form from placed balls and open play, scoring four first-half points, while Layla Hemp added a well-taken point from play.
The game became a real arm wrestle through the middle third, with Fiona Watters, Ciara McCarthy, Isabel Keddy and Sophie Brennan working tirelessly in defence, and Christine McCambridge and Sadhbh Nà Uileagóid driving the team forward around the middle.
A superb 45 from Eabha in the 27th minute brought us back to within a point, but St Maurs edged the closing stages of the half to lead 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.
*Battling Back*
The second half started at a fierce pace. Points from RóisÃn Wall and Lea Carey quickly reduced the gap to a single score, and BSJ were very much in the contest at 0-8 to 0-9.
There were huge moments during this period. Roisin Tuomey produced a brilliant save when called upon, and Alex Campbell followed with another important stop as the girls threw themselves into every challenge.
Layla Hemp was everywhere, tracking runners, helping out in defence, carrying the ball forward and linking play in attack. Her work rate and influence on the game never dropped for a second.
*Key Turning Point*
The decisive spell came midway through the second half when St Maurs struck for a goal to open up a five-point lead.
To the girls’ credit, they responded immediately. Christine McCambridge powered through for a brilliant goal in the 44th minute, cutting the gap back to two points and reigniting the contest.
St Maurs, however, answered with scores of their own and added a second goal late on to stretch the lead once more.
*A Moment of Real Quality*
BSJ never stopped fighting, and the standout moment of the closing stages came from Eabha McCuskar.
After a foul on the attack, the free was brought forward from around the halfway line all the way to the 20 metre line. St Maurs packed six players on the goal line, but Eabha showed incredible composure and power to blast the free to the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance and bringing the game back to life in dramatic fashion.
It was a brilliant finish to an outstanding individual performance.

She covered every blade of grass on the pitch, repeatedly dropping back to help the defence, winning and clearing loose ball, supporting teammates, and being at the heart of almost every attacking wave. Her energy, determination and willingness to work for the team from first whistle to last made her a deserved Player of the Match.

While the disappointment of missing out on the Cup semi-final is real, there were many positives in this performance:
