Senior Ladies bounce back in Championship
BSJ 3-11 Lucan 1-12
The third round of the Intermediate LGFA championship saw a strong Lucan side visit Marlay Park. Lucan, with a perfect 2/2 record in the first 2 rounds of games, knew that a win would see them through to the knockout stage while the BSJ girls had no room for further slip ups with 1 win from their 2 outings. So a win was essential to stay in the championship race.
By the time of throw in a good crowd of home support had turned up to lend a hand and it was noticeable that the Lucan sideline was also well attended with travelling support. And over the next hour they were treated to high-quality football in a well contested game.
The game started evenly with defences repelling early attacks before Lucan opened the scoring. However Ballinteer settled into their stride and slowly managed to edge matters in the middle third. Good attacking moves saw excellent scores from play from Orlagh (2), Ciara & Lauren before a well worked team move saw Emily finish to the Lucan net.
But Lucan are a good side and responded scoring a point first and then a good goal to keep within touching distance at 1-06 to 1-03 in arrears. Perhaps sensing danger the BSJ girls responded in kind and hit a purple patch of their own with 2 superbly taken goals in a 5-minute spell sandwiching a wonder score from Rebecca who travelled 80 meters out of defence before converting from 35 yards.
The half time whistle blew, and everyone paused for breath. BSJ 3-07 to Lucan 1-05 but nothing settled.
Everyone present braced for a tense second period and so it proved. This Lucan team are a good outfit with plenty of talent and threat in their ranks and they weren't going down without a fight. Lucan started the second half with real venom, applying pressure all over the field and dominating possession. Gradually they clawed back at the deficit with 4 well-taken points with BSJ managing just 1 in response.
Our defence had to be at its very best to deal with the lightning-fast Lucan forwards and their running game, but our girls were hugely committed, putting bodies on the line to thwart attack after attack in the danger zone. When a gap did appear Katie pulled off a truly world class brilliant save at a critical moment keeping out what looked like a certain goal. Hearts in mouths stuff!
Having come through that sustained pressure the BSJ girls now got some attacking plays away scoring a couple of well taken points to keep the score board ticking over and the gap of 4/5 points intact. With daylight fading the ref called time and the girls had shown great resolve to stay alive in the championship.
Another good night in Marley Park for the group, their families, the mentors, and the loyal BSJ supporters. The team that keeps giving! A great response following some disappointment the previous week. And credit to Lucan who contributed to a very exciting game.
