Adult Football Match Special Report
Despite winning all our matches to date comfortably , the final match V Stars was still going to determine the destination of the AFL Div 11 title for our Junior B team. So we all headed up to Glencullen on Thursday’s night in big numbers for this clash with our neighbours. This splendid venue was in immaculate condition with its beautiful surroundings.
We won the toss and played down the hill and against the breeze in the first half. The first score went to BSJ when Billy Daveron gathered the ball 30 metres from the goal ,cut in from the wing and his shot off the butt of the post was buried to the net by Shane Mc Gonagle . We followed up with 2 points from Collie O Donnell before Stars got their first score a point in the eleventh minute. A great point by Cian Duffy was followed by a barren period of ten minutes when we were held scoreless and battled very well to keep their attacks at bay. With hard hits going in and yellow cards galore been dished out, the backline marshalled by Ciaran Mc Cabe, Tont Gillick , Darragh Quinn and Shane Duffy stood firm .Our next score came from an unusual source ,when John Gillick battled by 3 players to kick an outstanding point. A further 3 points saw us go in at HT leading on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-3.
As you would expect from Stars, they started the second half strongly and kicked 2 points . We got the next 2 points from Collie O Donnell and Cian Hallinan to ease the nerves and leave us leading by 1-10 to 0-6 after 15 minutes. Two moves changed the course or the match dramatically after that. Instead of playing possession football around the middle and running into tackles ,we started delivering long balls into the full forward line where Collie O Donnell and Billy Daveron had the upper hand of their markers and the introduction of Mitch Moddy. The next score was a point when Mitch laid the ball off , took the return and pointed on the run . Then came the first of our second half goals. Mitch gave a long diagonal pass to Shane Holland who laid off to Mitch GOAL. The third arrived when Collie won a well placed pass from DJ Corbett ,laid it off the inrushing Mitch who side stepped the full back and buried into the back of the net. The score with 8 minutes remaining was 3-12 to 0-8. The fourth goal was one of beauty when Mitch again on the ball laid off to Eamon Brennan ,who with the goalkeeper advancing cooly placed the ball into the corner of the net. The final goal came from an excellent attaching movement and the pass across the square was palmed to the net by Mitch for his hat trick. Final score BSJ 5-14 to 0-8 with 4-6 coming in the last quarter. A wonderful display from all the players making it an impossible task to pick out names as best for BSJ. It is a credit management that we had 32 players togged out on the night.
So we finish the league unbeaten having scored 291 points and conceded 66 in 11 games ( we got 2 concessions), giving us a scoring difference of 225 points, by far the highest of the 192 teams in all the divisions. Next up is the Championship where we will play up a division
