Dublin Ladies PTSB League Div 2
BSJ 3-08 v St Maurs 0-04
An Impressive Display Against Strong Opposition
Summer Wednesday nights in Marley Park come with their familiar guarantees. The BSJ Ladies senior footballers in full flight, a loyal crowd of supporters, sunshine threatening to turn, and as the evening closes in, the arrival of those relentless midges making their presence felt.
With talk in the air about the forthcoming new rules, BSJ Ladies lined up against a formidable St Maur’s side who were close rivals on the league table, sitting a place below but with a game in hand. St. Maur’s have been a strong football club in recent seasons and are more like a Division 1 team so a tough challenge was expected for the BSJ girls.
From the off, both teams served up fast, expansive football that was good to watch. BSJ were clad in white to avoid a clash with the Maur’s dark maroon and they started well. The defence was robust and with early control around the middle third it gave a good platform to attack. The forward line was electric, opening space with intelligent lines of running and putting the Maur’s defence under sustained pressure. But scores were still well earned with well worked and sweet points following, though a handful of goal chances went unconverted. It felt like only a matter of time, but you always have a nagging worry that chances spurned may come back to bite.
At the other end, the BSJ back line was equally commanding, consistently snuffing out a dangerous St Maur’s attack. Half time: BSJ 0-4, St Maurs 0-2, a scoreline that flattered neither side given the excellent quality on show and it remained all to play for.
The second half, played into a crosswind, brought out the best in BSJ. Playing with greater conviction and intensity, they began to assert dominance and to pull the game apart. Three well-taken points set the platform, before three superb team worked goals put the result beyond doubt. Calm and clinical finishes from Ciara Kellegher and Laura Dunne (2) saw the green flags being waved. A closing point rounded off a commanding performance, and while St Maur’s never gave in and they pushed hard in the final ten minutes, they could find no way through a resolute BSJ defence. When half a chance presented Katie Moran Tighe in the goal was sharp to make a save and maintain her clean sheet.
A good evening’s work from this group to be happy with, and a performance that combined a nice style of play with good individual performances. Well done to Ruby & Kirsty joining the group this week from the Minor ranks and making a significant contribution and congratulations to Laura Dunne on her Player of the Match performance. Not even the midges could keep up with her!
Next week a tough away trip to table toppers Lucan with a slightly later 8.15 throw in. All support very welcome!!
