Ballinteer St John’s 4-06 Kilmacud Crokes 2-08
A Classic Game with BSJ Ladies Victorious
Any game against Kilmacud Crokes has an edge to it. Neighbours in every sport tend to have a more intense rivalry and winning this game and qualifying for a league final was extra special. Two super teams went head to head in a quality game. And did I mention that we will be joining our men's team in Division 1 in 2027?
There was dancing on the pitch from the players and there was plenty of fist-pumping and high-fives. The highs of competitive sport are as close as us mortals can get to nirvana. Months of hard work have gone into this team by the mentors and support staff, and to see that effort rewarded is a wonderful feeling.
After a worrying slow start, we found ourselves trailing 1-03 to 0-00 after 15 minutes. However, once our patterns of play began to click, a superb point and a well-taken goal brought us right back into the contest.
Kilmacud responded with three points, and you couldn't help feeling that they had more fuel in the tank. Their ability to transition from defence into the danger zone was impressive. If they averaged 30 seconds, we were taking double that. They were marking us tightly and making movement very difficult. The half ended 1-05 to 1-02 in favour of Kilmacud, and the large BSJ support was understandably anxious.
In the second half, our concerns were allayed as the BSJ ladies moved up another gear and began to dominate the crucial exchanges. This resulted in quicker ball arriving into the hands of our very dangerous forward line. It simply felt like we wanted it more.
The three magnificently taken goals were the product of moves that started with Katie in goal and passed through eight or nine pairs of hands in flowing, zig-zag attacks. That is what great football looks like.
Kilmacud stayed in the game and looked particularly dangerous during the final eight minutes as they repeatedly attacked our ramparts. However, the defence stood firm and victory belonged to BSJ.
In the words of Van the Man: "Nobody told me there'd be days like these."
