Seniors AFL 1

It was sunny but very windy for our clash in Marlay Pk against our neighbours Kilmacud Crokes . The local rivalry ensured a big  crowd in attendant .

With a number of our more experienced players not available we did have our 3 young Dublin panellist available , thus this was a very young starting team  .

We played against the wind in the first half and found the going tough . With us failing to win our own kick outs we were 4 points to nil down after 10 mins , 3 of which came from soft frees conceded

It took us 10 mins to get our first score, a point from a free. It was 6to 1 after 15 mins before Luke Cullen kicked a good point from a tight angle . We then exchanged points before Donnacha Carey kicked a good point following hard work from Ronan Cullen. We kicked the next 2 points to leave the score 8 to 5 in favour of Crokes at HT.

The second half was a lot better affair . Crokes got the first score a point. Then on the fifth minute we won a turnover in our own goalmouth and a quick movement up the field got the ball into Luke Cullan who rounded the keeper to tap into the net. Crokes hit back with 2 points . The next 10 mins was our  best period of the match with excellent movements resulting in 4 points and Donnacha hitting the butt of the post. Crokes came back again with another 2 points . We then created 2 good goal chances. The first from a long ball in that was gathered by  Jack Lundy behind the full back , but good keeping denied  him a goal . The next chance fell to Ronan Cullen who did everything right except keep the ball under the crossbar. Crokes got the next 2 scores to bring the game level . However following a good controlled build up, David Murray with a bit of space kicked a great point from 35 metres to give us a rare win over Crokes . Final score 1-13 to 0-15.

Best for BSJ were Liam Smith, Ben Millist, Joe Sweeney , Oisin Grady , Jack Lundy , Luke Breatnach ( 6 p , 2 from play , 4 from frees) and Luke Cullen.

So we are joint top of the division with Na Fianna after 4 games.

Next up is the first mid week match for the Seniors next Wednesday night. It is the long trip to the beautiful town of Malahide for a 7 pm throw in V St Sylvesters.

Inters AFL 4

Ballinteer St Johns Intermediate team took on St Oliver Plunketts in a windy Phoenix Park on Saturday evening. Plunkett’s played with the wind in the first half and when they scored a point directly from the throw in it looked like it might be a difficult first period. However the John's lads responded straight away, working the ball out of defence and great off the shoulder play produced a chance for Joey Quirke which he put away to level the game. The work rate from all the team was exceptional and they turned over the ball on a number of occasions and soon took the lead. The two man full forward line of Jack Long and Joey Quirke were causing the Plunkett’s defence huge problems and at the other end the defence being marshalled by Dan O Leary were giving nothing away..Further scores from John Clair, Cian Barry ,Joey Quirke and Dan O Leary gave Johns a 5 point lead at half time on a score line of 10pts to 5.

With the aid of the breeze in the second half Johns soon stretched their lead  and with the BSj midfield and half back line working extremely hard Plunketts were unable to respond. Eventually the goal that we had been threatening since the start of the game arrived, After winning another of Plunketts kick outs, a great ball from John Clair found Killian Minogue who ran through and buried the ball into the roof of the net.. There was no way back for Plunketts and another goal from Minogue and a goal from Jack Long gave Johns a comfortable 3-19 to 0-7 win.A brilliant team performance from a very young Intermediate team.

So after 4 games we are joint top with Clontarf , Geraldine P Moran and O Tooles.

Next up is our first midweek game next Wednesday , V St Marks , Marlay Pk at 7

Junior A AFL 8

Our Junior A went to St Annes Pk to play top of the table Clontarf.

We played with the  wind in the first half and were 5 points down at HT , 0-10 to 0-5. However in the second half we really battled strongly against a far older and more experienced team .

We outscored them in the second half but we conceded an unfortunate goal when the ball bounced over our keepers head . Our work rate was exceptional throughout the second half and should stand them well into the remainder of the season. Final score BSJ 1-10 Clontarf 2-11
Scorers by Lughaidh Lynch, Thomas Sheridan, Eoin Hoctor, Cathal McGarrigle, Seán Dunne and Shane Sheridan got a cracker of a goal!
Nathan Lhuillier, Gavin Fahy, Andrew Aherne, Danny Fanning & Lughaidh Lynch stood out..

Next up is a home game V Ballymun next Tuesday V Ballymun , Marlay Pk , 7pm

Junior B AFL 11

Our Junior B team played the first of our mid week matches on Monday night against Ballyfermot De Salle on a cold windy Marlay Pk.

Despite missing experienced players like DJ Corbett, Tony Gillick and Colm O Donnell we had 29 players togged out.

We opted to play with the wind ,and in the first 5 minutes we missed 2 good goal chances , before Cian Hallihan opened the scoring with a point. We got the first of our goals when following a 3 three man movement Brian Monny Monahan finished it to the net. This  followed up with an outstanding point by Billy Davoren and a nicely clipped point by Niall Mc Grath. The second goal game came when a beautiful floated pass by Floppy Murphy over the heads of the backs was gathered by Billy who buried it to the net. Ballyfermot got their first score , a point after 20 mins. Best score of the last minutes of the half  was a point by Billy who battled with the heavy weigh goalkeeper for a ground ball and pointed it soccer style. HT score 2-9 to 0-2

Cian Hallihan started the second half like the first with the first score, a point. The third goal came from Monny. In the opinion of this writer it was an attempted point that fell short, while the player maintains it was a beautiful executed lob of the keeper. Monny got his hattrick when he finished a breaking ball in the square to the net. Unfortunately he was then replaced , thus denying him of a chance to beat Colm O Donnell  record of 13 pts , scored in the first game of the season. The bench was emptied with veterans  Cian Duffy , Sean Murphy and the very lively young player Oisin Daffy coming on. Indeed Sean scored the next goal on his first touch. In fairness to Ballyfermot they kept on battling and were rewarded with a 1-1 in the space of the next 5 minutes. Final score BSJ 5-15 Ballyfermot 1-5

Best for BSJ were Stephen Callaghan in goal , Shane Duffy with his long accurate deliveries out of defence, the attacking wing back Ciaran mc Cabe, Darragh Quinn Shane Holland, the strong running no 11 Shane mc Gonagle , Billy Davoren, Cian Hallihan and top scorer Monny .

So after 4 games we are on our own at the  top of the table.

Next up is V Ballyboden on Sunday 28th in Ballycullen at 3pm
