Wednesday evening in Marlay park saw Ballinteer St. Johns Junior B ladies host Trinity Gaels, in the second round of the Championship. Having suffered defeat to St. Olafs in their first championship outing of the season BSJ had to take points from this game to keep alive any hopes of Championship silverware.
Despite being the height of holiday season BSJ were able to field a strong team boosted by 3 subs, with Masie White from the U16’s stepping in as goalkeeper to address the goalkeeper on holidays situation.
Undaunted by an early goal from Trinity Gaels, BSJ slowly stamped their authority on the game, and quickly regained the lead which they never relinquished throughout. BSJ were able to build attacks from defense with goalkeeper Masie White consistently picking out sisters Laura and Ciara Mc Carthy who in turn linked well with Luisga Guierann and Hanna O’Shea in the midfield and half forward lines. Luisagh and Hanna were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over with probing runs resulting in scores for themselves or layoffs to Danielle Clune and Holly Barr, in the forward line, who where able to convert at a sufficient rate to take a 6 point lead into halftime.
As expected, Trinity Gaels sensing they were not out of the match started the second half with gusto, no doubt prompted by a stirring halftime speech along the theme of 'we're not out of this match’, which they weren’t. Despite continuing to dominate BSJ were leaking scores allowing Trinity Gaels to narrow their deficit to 4 points. Substitutes Leah Kavanagh and Jessica Moody scored goals a piece to restore a comfortable leading margin, which was indeed required with Trinity Gaels converting a late penalty to reduce the leading margin to 6 points.
Next up we have championship toppers Ballymun Kickhams. With an ever improving Ballinteer team we will be well up for the game.
Final score: BSJ 5 - 10 Trinity Gaels 4 – 7
